With Apple’s second generation AirTags now widely available, we’re already seeing inventory of the first generation model begin to dwindle. case in point? Amazon is no longer selling a single AirTag, and it’s unclear if or when the retailer will restock the first-generation model. Thankfully, you can still pick up a four-pack of first-generation location trackers at Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy for Presidents Day for about $64 ($35 off), which is $2 less than the bundle’s best price ever. If you only want one, you can also purchase a single tracker from Walmart for $17 ($12 off).
If you own an iPhone, you’ll be hard-pressed to find another tracker that’s as accurate or helpful as Apple’s AirTag. That’s because, like the second-generation model, the original can tap into Apple’s vast Find My network and take advantage of ultra wideband (UWB) technology. As a result, all you have to do is open the Find My app on your phone and follow the on-screen arrows, sounds or vibrations, which will guide you to the exact location of your item, even if it’s slid between the seats of your car. This level of accuracy is lacking in many rival trackers, especially Tiles.
In addition to the above software features, Apple’s convenient location trackers are designed to last. The battery can last up to a year, and when it runs out, you’ll just have to swap in a standard CR2032 cell instead of replacing the tracker entirely. Each AirTag also has an IP67 rating, meaning it can withstand both dust and a little rain.
There are a few features you’ll miss out on if you go with the last-generation AirTags instead of the newer models, including an advanced UWB chip that enables more accurate location tracking. The second-generation version can also help you track objects further away, and the speaker is 50 percent louder. But if you want to save some cash, the Origin is still one of the better trackers on the market and definitely worth picking up while you can.
