Later this year, Apple will begin manufacturing the Mac Mini within the country for sale in the US. the company took wall street journal on a tour of its Houston facility, where Foxconn is also making servers for Apple Intelligence, and was shown an empty warehouse. Apple says it will convert the space into a 220,000-square-foot plant where it will produce compact desktop computers. The decision to produce the Mac mini for local sales within the US is part of the company’s efforts to fulfill its pledge last year that it would spend $500 billion in the US over the next four years.
If you remember, after Tim Cook met President Trump, Apple had announced that it was going to increase its investments and hiring in the US. The President said at the time that the company was increasing its US investments because it wanted to avoid tariffs. Before that pledge, Apple had vowed to invest $430 billion domestically over the next five years during the Biden administration in 2021.
In form of magazine Note, Apple previously made Mac Pros at a facility in Texas, but production at the plant has decreased in recent years. Apple’s COO Sabih Khan told magazine The company feels more confident in projecting long-term demand for the Mac mini. Plus, this model makes up a small portion of Apple’s sales, making it one of the best options for the company if it wants to bring more production to the US. After all, it would be incredibly difficult to ramp up production of a high-demand product, such as the iPhone. Companies that make and assemble iPhones in China already have factories and people trained to produce Apple’s best-selling devices.
Khan said the Houston facility will be able to meet local demand as production increases, indicating it could start on a smaller scale. Apple will also continue to manufacture the Mac Mini in Asia for everyone else in the world.
