Woz said it seems like everyone is trying to “make a brain” with AI, but everyone knows how to make a brain “in a process that takes nine months.” The tech giant was clearly poking fun at how carrying a human for nine months is the only way to conceive properly.
“I don’t use AI much, but I asked some questions to test it,” Wozniak said. “Now I’ll ask a question where a word is the main object, the direction I want to go, and the AI will come back with a whole bunch of obvious explanations that are on topic, but not ones I was really interested in.”
Woz further said that it “may be difficult to explain” what he was understanding, but “I often read things and they seem very dry and very perfect, and I want something from a human being, and I’m very disappointed.”
The CNN host was unperturbed by Woz’s negative approach and seemed to proceed with pre-planned questions, perhaps assuming he would have been more receptive to the idea that AI would revolutionize technology in a positive way.
“Do you think it could get better and eventually replace humans in some cases?” the CNN host asked.
Woz replied that all things get better, but added, “I have not yet seen any sign that we understand well enough how the brain works to get to the point that it replaces the human; has emotions; cares about things; wants to help others; wants to be a good human being.”
“No, I don’t think I don’t see any signs of that yet,” he added. “You can’t say that something can’t happen with technology.”
Woz further said that “someday maybe it could be really smart” and that it “might even be able to understand you the same way any other human being does.” But he explained that it “has not lived a human life” and that he believes “it’s essential to understand what humans are going through, sometimes to capture those little nuances in the way you speak.”
