The Washington Commanders began their offensive recruiting by trading for wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. during the offseason. Projected as the perfect running mate for second-team All-Pro wideout Terry McLaurin, giving quarterback Jayden Daniels a legitimate 1-2 punch to rely on deep in the playoffs.
This has not happened. McLaurin has seen little due to injury. Daniels has only played six games and could be out even longer with a dislocated elbow. Samuel, who was criticized for his conditioning and injury problems after the trade, has missed consecutive games.
And he has performed well. Without McLaurin, Samuel has had to be the top guy in Washington’s receiver room. There have been a few occasional dips, but he’s easily become the Commander’s most reliable pass-catcher — even if that’s not a high feat.

Samuel is making the best of a bad situation at the moment. The former South Carolina veteran was not expected to be the primary focus of opposing defenses, but health concerns have made it easier for the defense to limit his impact.
