Netflix may have to lower its subscription costs in Italy instead of raising prices again. A court in Rome recently ruled that Netflix must give its Italian users refunds for price increases and reductions in previous subscription costs between 2017 and January 2024. In addition to the refund, Netflix Italia must inform its affected customers of their right to a refund.
The lawsuit was originally filed by Rome-based consumer rights organization Movimento Consumatori. The group’s president, Alessandro Mostasio, said in a press release that more than 25,000 Netflix users have complained to Movimento Consumatori that they are not satisfied with price increases over the past few years. According to lawyers representing consumers, premium customers are entitled to a refund of about 500 euros, while standard tier customers should get back about 250 euros.
Mostasio also said that if Netflix does not immediately reduce prices and refund the money to its customers, the consumer rights organization will file a class action lawsuit to recover the funds. Netflix spokesperson said reuters It will appeal the Italian court’s decision, and said the company “takes consumer rights very seriously and believes that our terms always comply with Italian laws and practice.” On the other side of the world, Netflix raised prices again across all its subscription tiers, this time for its US customers.
