The DDR5 memory pricing crisis has thrown the entire PC market into complete chaos, including the pricing of AMD’s flagship AM4 gaming chip. eBay prices for the Ryzen 7 5800X3D have skyrocketed to such an extent that these chips are regularly being sold for more money than a brand new Ryzen 7 9800X3D.
Second-hand prices for the 5800X3D on eBay average around $500-$600. Some of the best-selling units sold for around $800, which shows how desperate some buyers are to purchase AMD’s best gaming chip that still uses DDR4 memory. The average price of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is around $500 right now, which is more than AMD’s latest Ryzen 7 9800X3D. Even AMD’s slightly lower-end Ryzen 7 5700X3D is available on eBay for $300-$450.
For reference, these prices are almost double those of the brand new Ryzen 7 5800X3D. The chip initially launched at a $450 MSRP, but eventually dropped into the $320 range a few months later. The lowest price we saw for the chip (brand new) was $269 in August 2023.
Secondhand prices for the 5800X3D have been at or near MSRP for some time, due to the fact that AMD stopped producing the 5800X3D some time ago. However, its recent price increase of over $500 is new, likely due to the new DRAM pricing crisis forcing buyers to move back to AM4. AM4 is the only platform that supports DDR4. AMD chose to drop DDR4 support entirely when creating AM5. Intel is also in a similar boat, having exclusively discontinued DDR5 support for its latest Core Ultra 200S series chips.
The Ryzen 7 5800X3D took the PC gaming world by storm when it launched in 2022, being the first CPU to take advantage of AMD’s 3D-VCache technology. The performance was a generation ahead of other Zen 3 parts, allowing it to outperform Intel’s $700+ Core i9-12900KS flagship at the time in gaming performance. Once Zen 4 arrived, the 5800X3D continued to provide value, proving to be an excellent mid-range option and outperforming some of AMD’s lower-end Ryzen 7000 parts in gaming performance while running on a cheaper AM4 platform with cheaper DDR4 memory.
It may seem strange to buy a 5800X3D for $500, but the chip is being bought at these high prices because of the aforementioned AM4 support. AM4 is still thriving, with plenty of AM4 motherboards still selling for under $150 at major retailers. Where AM4 is excelling right now is in motherboard and memory combos; At Newegg, you can still find an AM4 motherboard + DDR4 memory combo for $150 or less. However, DDR4 RAM has also not been immune to price increases, meaning you still need to shop around for the bargain unless you already have some.
If you just bought a used Ryzen 7 On the other hand, if you have a 5800X3D or 5700X3D, this is the best time to sell it.
