AMD hints Microsoft could launch its next-gen Xbox in 2027

Microsoft confirmed last year that it was working on a next-generation Xbox console in partnership with AMD. Now, AMD is hinting that the next Xbox console, which will use custom AMD chips, could launch in 2027.

“Development of Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox featuring AMD semi-custom SoCs is progressing well to support a launch in 2027,” AMD CEO Lisa Su said on an earnings call today. Brief comment does not confirm Microsoft Desire launch a new Xbox in 2027, but this suggests that AMD is ready to support the launch, if Microsoft is willing too.

Microsoft last year entered into a “strategic multi-year partnership” with AMD that will see the pair co-engineer silicon “across a portfolio of devices – including our next-generation Xbox consoles in your living room and in your hands.” AMD and Microsoft are also working together to create the next generation Xbox cloud gaming servers.

Microsoft is teasing that the next-generation Xbox will be some sort of hybrid console and PC, with Xbox companion devices serving as a starting base for this ultimate goal. “The next-generation console is going to be a very premium, very high-end curated experience,” Xbox president Sarah Bond said in October.

Microsoft hasn’t put a date on its next-generation Xbox, and the documents that leaked as part of it FTC vs Microsoft The case basically points towards a possible 2028 release. Those documents, which no longer reflect current plans, mentioned using a custom AMD CPU as well as a co-designed AMD GPU.
