Leawood, Kan., Dec. 22, 2025–(Business Wire)–AMC Entertainment (NYSE: AMC), the largest theatrical exhibitor in the United States and the world, today announced a strong opening-weekend performance for Avatar: Fire and Ash across AMC’s U.S. theaters and Odeon Cinemas internationally. With solid performances from several other new releases and holdover films, AMC enjoyed its best pre-Christmas holiday weekend since 2021, based on attendance and admission revenue.
In total, more than 4 million moviegoers saw a movie at AMC Theaters and Odeon Cinemas from Thursday, December 18 to Sunday, December 21.
Attendance was primarily driven by Avatar: Fire and Ash, which opened last weekend with $88 million domestically and $345 million globally. In AMC’s US theaters, 3D was the most popular way to experience the third installment of the blockbuster franchise. Nearly 2/3 of AMC US admissions revenue for Avatar: Fire and Ash came from IMAX 3D, Dolby Cinema 3D and RealD 3D Showtime.
The box office balance was also impressive. For the first time in 2025, it is projected that five films will make at least $14 million at the domestic box office in a single weekend. By Sunday, new releases David, The Housemaid, and The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Squarepants, along with holdover Zootopia 2, were projected to reach that milestone.
Adam Aron, Chairman and CEO of AMC, commented:
“James Cameron, his cast and crew, and the incredible team at Disney have done it again. Avatar: Fire and Ash is a true cinematic masterpiece that deserves to be seen on the big screen. It is a wonderful gift to theaters and moviegoers during the holiday season.
“Additionally, five different movie titles are currently earning big at the box office, a strong demonstration that there is something for everyone at AMC Theaters and Odeon Cinemas this holiday season. With AMC’s vast array of premium screens as well as great value offerings like the AMC Popcorn Pass and AMC’s “50% off” tickets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, this is a great way for movie lovers, friends and families to come together and enjoy the big screen experience at AMC.
