A title fight between Amanda Nunes and Kayla Harrison could take place in a future UFC main event.
UFC insider Ariel Helwani revealed on his podcast on Monday that the two could compete for the UFC women’s bantamweight title as the main event of an upcoming UFC card.
“What I’m hearing is the plan is, at the forefront, Kayla versus Amanda,” Helwani said.
Helwani mentioned January’s pay-per-view, which will be UFC 324 in Las Vegas, where the only scheduled fight currently is between Nikita Krylov and Modestos Bukauskas.
Nunes won the bantamweight title in July 2016 and successfully defended it five times before losing it in 2021 when Juliana Pena defeated her at UFC 269. She reclaimed the title from Pena the following year and defended it with a victory over Irene Aldana at UFC 289 in 2023.
The fight against Aldana was Nunes’ most recent fight, as she announced her retirement after the bout.
In June, Nunes revealed that she planned to come out of retirement and wanted to fight the winner of the bout between Harrison and Pena. Harrison won that fight in June, setting up a possible meeting with Nunes.
Harrison, 35, spent the first part of his career competing in judo. She won two Olympic gold medals in 2012 and 2016 before making her MMA debut in 2018. After finding early success in the sport, she made her UFC debut in 2024 with a victory over Holly Holm at UFC 300.
After defeating Katelyn Vieira at UFC 307 last October, she won the bantamweight championship against Pena, her biggest win to date.
Now, Harrison may get a chance to prove herself even more if she gets the chance to defend her title against a Hall of Famer like Nunes.
