Aitana Bonmati suffers broken leg in Spain training | Football News

The three-time Ballon d’Or winner suffered the injury while training ahead of the second leg of the Women’s Nations League final with Spain.

Barcelona women’s star player Etana Bonamati is set to be out for several months after suffering a fractured foot during training with the Spanish national team.

The three-time Ballon d’Or winner will miss the second leg of the Women’s Nations League final against Germany on Tuesday and several matches for her club in the coming weeks.

Catalan media said Bonmati will be sidelined for “at least two months” as he recovers from the injury suffered on Sunday, which could worsen to the point of requiring surgery.

The Spanish Football Federation said Bonamati finished the morning training session “in pain after a bad landing” that occurred during an accidental fall, before he was diagnosed with a “fracture of the left fibula”.

“The player will return to Barcelona and her club to begin her recovery period,” it added.

Bonamati started for Spain in the 0-0 draw against Germany in the first leg of the Nations League final on Friday.

She will also miss the upcoming Champions League games against Benfica and Paris FC in December, as well as the Spanish Super Cup and various Liga F matches in January.

Barca are six points ahead of Real Sociedad in the league, while they are joint-top of the Champions League stage table with French giants Lyon.

The fracture comes after an extraordinary year for the 27-year-old, who became the first player to win the Women’s Ballon d’Or three times, helped Barcelona achieve a domestic treble, and reached the Euro 2025 final with Spain – although losing to England on penalties.

Spain coach Sonia Bermudez said on Monday it would be a “huge loss” as Spain prepare to play in the second leg of the Nations League final.

“The mood was a bit bad yesterday because it is very difficult when a teammate gets injured. We hope she recovers as soon as possible,” he said.

“The team is fine and knows that they will have support from around the world. We want to dedicate this victory to those who are injured. Etana wanted to be in the final with us, but we have to prioritize the health of the players.”

Spain captain Irene Paredes also expressed grief over Bonamati’s injury.

“An absence like Etana’s makes you frustrated because no one likes to see a teammate injured and suffering,” he said.

“But we are going to move forward, we have other players as well and everyone is capable of contributing.”
