Adrian Newey: Aston Martin name legendary designer as new F1 team principal from 2026 season replacing Andy Cowell | F1 News

Adrian Newey will become team principal of Aston Martin from the 2026 Formula 1 season and Andy Cowell will take up a new role in the organisation.

Newey will combine this role with the role of managing technical partner since joining the team from Red Bull earlier this year.

It will be the first time that Newey, F1’s most famous and successful car designer, has taken on the role of team principal.

Cowell, who took over the role of team boss from Mike Craik earlier this year, will take up the new role of chief strategy officer ahead of the first season of Aston Martin’s engine partnership with Honda.

Former Mercedes engine guru Cowell joins Aston Martin as chief executive officer for the first time in 2024 and adds responsibility for day-to-day control of the team ahead of this season.

“Over the past nine months, I have seen great individual talent within our team,” Newey said.

“I look forward to taking on this additional role as we put ourselves in the best possible position to compete in 2026, where we will face a completely new situation with Aston Martin, now a works team combined with the considerable challenge posed by the new regulations.

“Andy’s new role, focusing on the integration of the new PU with our three key partners, will be critical in this journey.”

Cowell said: “As we transition to a full working team and lay the foundation for Adrian and the wider organisation, having implemented much-needed structural changes, it is the right time for me to take on a different role as Chief Strategy Officer.

“In this role, I will help optimize the technical partnership between the team, Honda, Aramco and Valvoline and ensure seamless integration of the team’s new PU, fuel and chassis.”
