Acquiring TeX Live – TeX Users Group

Acquisition of TeX Live – TeX User Group

TeX live availability

TeX Live is now available for download.

You can get TeX Live in several ways. If you have a proper internet connection, we first recommend:

future releases

The last general update of packages and programs for DVD was made around March 1, 2026. However, we continuously update packages in TL as they are released on CTAN; Post-installation updates are done with the tlmgr program. tlmgr also provides several other TeX installation options and features, which are described in the tlmgr documentation.

Although it is possible to update it continuously, it is not necessary or particularly recommended. The set of packages and programs included in the official release will probably be sufficient unless you know you need a specifically made update from then on. That set is also the only set that is tested as a consistent release. On the other hand, if you want to receive updates, please report any issues you find to the package authors.

previous releases

Older releases of TeX Live are available below
system/texlive/ In historical collections; Both the initial release each year (that is, on the DVD release), and the stable state at the end of the cycle.
tlnet-final/ Subdirectory. If you need a release of a particular vintage you may find one useful. The installation records are in the same places.

There is no problem with installing multiple versions of TL (in different directories); In fact, the default directory structure is arranged to facilitate this. After installation, simply set your PATH accordingly.

If you have an older release installed, and you want to update or install a given package, this can be done using one of the above directories as a repository. For example, to receive a package at the end of the 2022 cycle:

tlmgr option repository https://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/tex/historic/systems/texlive/2022/tlnet-final
tlmgr update ...

The historical repository has many mirrors (more mirrors are welcome), so please choose the best mirror for you instead of copying the utah.edu URL above.

If you want to update from tlnet on a specific day and not at the end of a release, you can use tlnet-archive.

There are no updates to TeX Live YYYY after the release of YYYY+1.

Getting GnuPG (GPG) on Windows or Mac

If you’re on Windows or Mac, and don’t already have GnuPG (aka GPG) installed: Once the installation is done, you may wish to run it

tlmgr --repository http://www.texlive.info/tlgpg/ install tlgpg # windows/mac

This will help to check that further updates come from an authentic source. On other systems, you must install GPG through your operating system’s package manager, outside of TeX Live. This can be done at any time.

Getting TeX through your distro

This page is about getting the “original” TeX live – the version of TeX released by TeX user groups. If you want to get TeX as it is packaged by myriad operating system distros, check out the information available from the particular distro you want. Some distro links. Then any updates will have to be done through your distro only.
