Absolute Robin Is a Giant Goddamn Robot

DC’s Absolute Universe started an arms race of how big you can make a comic book character when it kicked things off with the impressively broad Absolute Batman, a unit of vigilante superheroes. Then things started getting bigger and weirder as Bruce’s thick torso world expanded even more. Now? Well, they’re taking the piss because the Robin of the Absolute Universe is finally here – and he’s more mecha than boy.

This week DC Comics revealed the cover of its latest milestone issue of course batmanIts 20th, fully revealing that Absolute Robin is on the way… and Absolute Robin is a Gundam mounted on Bane Juice.

In fact, even more than that, Absolute Robin is actually one of many Giant robots are getting to us. It seems as if “Robin” is less of an individual title and more of a team title. We also see a more medically inclined Robin-bot stomping in the background of the cover, as well as a trio of more appropriately sized humans surrounding Batman, wearing color-coded armor with matching motorcycles. So maybe it’s less that the Robins are Gundam and more that the Robins, as a team, are basically a power Rangers/Super Sentai Riff. But given the general tone of the Absolute books, there’s probably a lot more going on.

Here’s the brief logline provided by DC for issue 20:

As the dust settles over Gotham City after a loss [redacted]The Robins enter the scene ready to hunt and more than one mystery will be revealed in this seminal issue.

The interesting thing is that this is not the first time of course batman Writer Scott Snyder has dabbled in the world of Bat-Mech. During the lead role in 2015 batmanWhen Prime-Bruce stopped being Batman after a brutal battle with the Joker, Jim Gordon took over Bat-duties with a mech suit of his own make (it was eventually destroyed, alas). So Snyder must have really liked this idea!

I guess when your Batman is already built like a tank, making Robin a giant robot is a logical size progression. Maybe whenever we get the Absolute Batgirl, she could be the Death Star? of course batman #20 is set to launch on May 13th.
