8 Things We Liked About ‘Bat-Fam’ and 2 Things We Didn’t

Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios fans, rejoice: bat family Gotham’s Caped Crusader is here to take us on more adventures with little Batman.

After the beginning of the celebration of merry little batmanThe holiday feature that introduced Damian Wayne (Yonas Kibreb), Prime Video brings back more heroic antics of growing up at Wayne Manor. This time, there is a new ward, Claire (Haley Tzu) – formerly Volcana, but after falling into the Lazarus Pit, she becomes a teenager and Damian’s older sister. Alfred (James Cromwell) returns, and his niece Alicia Pennyworth (London Hughes) joins in the fun. And they’re all, of course, haunted by the ghost of Damian’s grandfather, Ra’s al Ghul (Michael Benayer), who urges Little Batman to join the dark side.

Here are eight things we liked about the Prime Video and Amazon Kids+ series and two things we didn’t.

Liked: Bruce is learning to be a dad who doesn’t work alone

It truly does take a village of superheroes to raise children. Bruce Wayne now has two children in Claire and Damian, they’re brother and sister – with their older-teenager and younger-child dynamic they have a lot to deal with. Thankfully, she got Alfred, who was ready to be a parent again, and Alicia to help Claire through her teenage years. Relationships are at the core of this show and it really is an entertaining watch.

Didn’t like: Robin is not part of the family

Robin, as we know him, the sidekick and first ward of Batman’s Caped Crusader, is notably absent as a core member of the Wayne family. This makes sense, as the show wanted to include Claire as an older sibling. This is a new relationship with a lot more to explore, and we’ve seen Damian and Robin in several other shows, recently harley quinn,

Elder daughters unite! As a teenager battling her inner demons, in this case her old Volcana identity, Claire is very relatable. We love a goth girl using her darkness for a good arc, and this show has it in a big way. He and the other villains who have been rehabilitated by working with Alicia’s E-Will (ex-villain) organization are hilarious. It’s nice to see Toot, Giganta and the others trying to assimilate into civilian life.

bad guy is in the lineup bat family Is a killer, and not just because of Killer Frost. The show features Killer Croc, Clayface, the Mad Hatter and, of course, the clown prince of crime. Each actual villain on the show poses a threat in ways that really test the Bat-fam as Batman assembles a team despite his reluctance to work together or encourage Little Batman to fight crime.

Didn’t Like: Can the real Selena please “meow”?

Alas, the show’s main character is the Selina Wayne family cat. There’s no Catwoman here, which would be weird since Damian’s mother is Talia. Still, the feline version is a weird and very cute little Easter egg nod to the iconic Gotham City Siren.

Damian is the hero the kids deserve, the one Gotham needs. With the genius of his Wayne and al Ghul lineage, he is shrewd and can sense danger faster than his father and grandfather. The joy this kid has in fighting crime is a joy to watch and makes for the most adorable action scenes. We especially liked his fight with Clayface and some of the surprising choices he made when the big bad shows up later in the season.

Bruce opting out of the trial and being allowed to become a father is not the arc we were expecting to have such emotional resonance. Alicia and Alfred really bring out the best in Bruce outside of his Batman identity, and their relationship speaks to the support that parents need not only from their own families, but also from those who become an established family.

Liked: Alfred Pennyworth, MVP

Alfred is the heart of the show, the glue that holds the family together. He is the parenting blueprint that helps Bruce realize he is no longer a child; He is now the patriarch of the superhero group he is raising. It’s also a joy to see Alfred don the armored Bat-suit when the family goes on their first hero outing. Eventually he gets off the bench and starts kicking the crook. We live for it!

Liked: Volcana and Little Batman Team-Up

Little Batman and Volcana have emerged as the main heroes of the series, leading the way. It’s a great story to be the center of the show. Damian helping Claire break out of her shell to see that she can be good was so heartfelt and hilarious. Big sisters can relate to the realization that there’s more we can do together with our little brothers, like saving Gotham City.
