7 horror films that will make you happy you’re single

For the most part, horror urges you not to stay in the scary dwelling, not to run upstairs when you should run out the front door, and definitely not to “investigate” any strange noises in the attic.

But some movies will also advise you to do something else entirely: enjoy being alone.

It’s a real niche within the genre, but we’ve figured out the horror movies that single people will probably get more out of than anyone else. Meeting a partner’s family for the first time is always a stressful experience. Jordan Peele’s directorial debut takes this fear and runs with it, creating quite possibly the worst nightmare imaginable and placing poor old Chris right at the center of it.

3. ready or Not

What if they forced you to participate in their disgusting traditions? Alison Oswalt may be a committed true crime writer, but she’s an absolutely terrible husband. Despite occasionally making genuine noises about caring for his wife and children, he is so obsessed with regaining his rapidly declining fame that he (a) does not tell his wife that he has literally taken her to the Murder House, and b) ignores repeated signs and warnings that whoever killed the previous residents may also come after him and his children.

Truly a reminder that marriages don’t always end well.

5. Shining

If you’re going to be stuck in a big, fancy hotel in the winter with no outside contact or hope of escape, you’ll at least want to be with your family, right?

As murderous old Jack Torrance makes clear in Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Stephen King’s classic novel, sometimes it’s the people closest to you who can hurt you the most – in this sense, as becomes clear when Jack gets his hands on a nearby axe.
