5 best Black Friday beauty deals, sourced by a beauty tech reviewer

table of contents

One of the biggest benefits of being a beauty tech product tester is that I get to see firsthand whether the latest multi-styler, hair dryer, or microcurrent device is worth the hype.

With experience covering Black Friday deals for the past four years, I’m especially well-equipped to determine which beauty savings are really worth picking up during the shopping holiday. Spoiler alert: Not everything marked down is a phenomenal deal. Also, as someone who has a lot of experience testing high-end products (i.e. basically Dyson’s entire lineup), spawning several duplicates and seeing the latter perform well in many cases, I specifically advise against adding anything to your cart just because it has a higher price tag or a more recognizable brand name.

dyson supersonic neural

I’ll be the first to say that while the Supersonic is my favorite hair tool from Dyson, it’s probably too expensive for most people, especially with all the great duplicates out there (more on that below). That said, it’s a nice luxury upgrade. If you’re determined to buy this Black Friday, skip the $379 standard Supersonic and spend an extra $20 to get the Supersonic Neural on sale for $379. It has a better change of attachments, automatic temperature adjustment with some attachments, and a much better (and more unique) diffuser. If you’re interested in Neural but find it too expensive, you can also pick up a refurbished one from Walmart for $209.

dyson airwrap id

To be honest, I was a little disappointed when I first tested Airwrap – the technology was cool, but not as easy to use as social media would have you believe. Plus, the curling barrel gave my hair more of a frizzy look than it actually was, and it fell out by the end of the day. With the Dyson Airwrap ID, the brand has addressed these issues. One of the curling barrels has a tapered design, which helped me get tight, beautiful, and long-lasting curls. The other piece of the puzzle was the automatic temperature changes that you can activate directly through the tool or through the Dyson app, which adjusts the heat as you wrap the hair, hold it around the barrel, and cool the shot for a set amount of time. Although I anticipated this might look artificial, it made styling less effort for me.

The full price of the OG Airwrap was $599, and the Airwrap ID is $649. However, this deal drops it down to $499.99, which is the same sale price found on the original AirWrap during the shopping holidays (this time too). It’s still a hefty price, so if curling your hair is still a priority, I recommend checking out the T3 Aire 360 – the ceramic barrels help create and lock curls.

shark flexstyle

The Shark Flexstyle is the original AirWrap duplicate, and is still one of the best. The performance is similar enough to the Airwrap that I tell my friends and family to buy it when they ask whether they should buy a Dyson Airwrap. Several Mashable shopping reporters and editors have purchased this tool for themselves, and they all praise it. The main differences between the Shark and more expensive tools are that you won’t get the AirWrap ID’s fancy heat-adjusting cycle, and you’ll have to switch the curling barrel to change the direction of the curl. (Although as a tip, you can turn the styler upside down to easily change the direction of the curls without changing the barrel.) At $199, this is the best value multi-styler we’ve found so far. And if you want a more curated version, Shark is also offering a build-your-own model, which allows you to choose four attachments for $179.

Lifen Swift Hair Dryer

Remember what I said about the Dyson Supersonic duplicate being worth a look? Enter: the Lifan Swift SE, one of the best Dyson duplicates I’ve tried. It’s light, powerful, relatively quiet (as far as hair dryers go), and hasn’t failed me even after years of use. And at a selling price of $97.99, it’s a fraction of the cost of the Supersonic. It comes with basic attachments that work well. You can buy an even cheaper model of the dryer, the Swift SE Lite, for $59.99. It’s a little less powerful, with a glossy plastic casing (compared to the matte casing found on the regular Swift), but if you blow-dry your hair less often or just want a more affordable option, it’s also a great option.

Shark CryoGlow and FlexFusion Bundle

This bundle of Shark CryoGlow and FlexFusion is for skin care and hair care lovers. After three months of testing the Shark CryoGlow Mask, senior shopping reporter Leah Stoddart determined that “Shark’s face mask has clearly proven its worth in my skin care routine, and I would recommend it to almost anyone.” The mask contains red, blue, and infrared lights, allowing it to target acne, dark circles, fine lines, and uneven texture. Even at its full price of $349.99, this is one of the more reasonably priced red light masks on the market. FlexFusion is absolutely designed to be a workhorse, designed to be used with both wet and dry hair for straightening, volumizing, and curling. By itself, the FlexFusion configuration in this bundle is $349.99, which means you save almost $200 with this bundle.
