4.6 magnitude earthquake rattles Hawaii’s Big Island

A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck the southeastern portion of Hawaii’s Big Island on Wednesday night just before midnight local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

According to the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, the incident occurred on the southern flank of Kilauea volcano. The agency said no tsunami was expected as a result.

The USGS said in a press release that the quake’s depth was about three miles underground, and that the seismic event does not appear to be related to the recent Kilauea volcanic eruption.

“The earthquake had no apparent impact on Mauna Loa or Kilauea Volcano. The event occurred about 10 minutes after the Episode 37 lava fountain on Kilauea ended, but does not appear to be directly related to the eruption. Most earthquakes in the region are caused by movement of Kilauea’s southern flank,” the press release said in part.

There is no news of any damage due to the earthquake.
