3 Keys to Winning for the Rams against the Panthers in Week 13

1) Keep Rico Dowdle under control

According to Pro Football Focus, since Dowdle took over the starting running back role in Week 5, he has led the league in rushing yards with 560. He is the focal point of the Panthers’ offense and the Rams should focus on limiting his impact, especially since their passing attack often impacts group game success. Expect newly expanded inside linebacker Nate Landman to shoot some gaps and make some plays against the run.

Dowdall got just six carries last week against the 49ers and then expressed his frustration on social media. Head coach Dave Canales took responsibility after the game, saying that his incredibly pass-heavy approach was not in the best interests of the team, so expect Dowdle to be involved early and often on Sunday.

2) Take advantage of the Panthers’ injuries on defense

The Panthers will be without their top cornerback and one of the league’s best cover corners, Jesse Horn (concussion). Also missing will be former Rams inside linebacker Christian Roseboom (hip, hamstring) and inside linebacker Claudin Charellas (concussion). The Rams will have an opportunity to take advantage of a favorable matchup with the Panthers’ leaders in tackles (Rozeboom) and interceptions (Horn), both sidelined with injuries.

3) Pressure quarterback Bryce Young, but keep him in the pocket

Head coach Sean McVay and outside linebacker Jared Versus both noted the importance of keeping Young contained during their press conferences this week. Young’s four touchdown passes lead the league in pressure outside the pocket, so putting pressure on him inside the tackle box will be key for the Rams’ defense.

Similar to Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield last week, Young has mastered making plays out of structure, so the Rams will need to loosen up the pocket without giving Young a chance to run away. The Panthers will also be without two starting offensive linemen in center Cade Mays (ankle) and Chandler Zavala (calf), giving the Rams an advantage in their pass rush.
