1 especially concerning trend behind Klay Thompson’s frustrating season

The post 1 specifically related to the trend behind Klay Thompson’s disappointing season appeared first on ClutchPoints.

Dallas Mavericks guard Klay Thompson is a future Hall of Famer. However, Thompson has struggled throughout the 2025–26 season. A particularly concerning tendency could be the reason behind their struggles.

Thompson has always been a great shooter off a bounce, and he is also capable of catch-and-shoot. Clay can also find the bottom of the net from most spots behind the arc, and shooting from the corner has never been a problem before – until this season.

Thompson has made 43.6 percent of his shots from the corner in his career. His percentages from corners have been below his career average in recent seasons, but they are still respectable. For example, last season he shot 39 percent from the corner. However, so far in the 2025-26 campaign, Thompson is shooting just 29 percent on his corner three-point shots, according to Basketball Reference.

Rather unsurprisingly, Thompson hit the side of the backboard twice during the Mavs’ most recent game on Saturday — a 102-96 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies.

Maybe it’s the decline, but it seems like Thompson is off his game right now. Overall, he is averaging 10.1 points per outing on 34.7 percent field goal and 32.1 percent three-point shooting. There’s more to Thompson’s struggles than just the corner three, but this is a worrying trend that certainly isn’t helping matters.

The corner three used to be one of Thompson’s most reliable shots. He often sprinted to the corner and got good looks in the Golden State Warriors’ motion offense. The lack of play-making on the Mavericks’ current roster may be having a negative impact on him. Regardless, Thompson has also struggled to find good presence at the basket this year.

Thompson will try to find his rhythm against the Heat on Monday night in Miami.
